The Henry L. Guenther Foundation has been supporting the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, one of the best charities in Los Angeles, for more than 20 years. This support has provided an estimated half-million meals to the community. The Food Bank acquires food and grocery products and distributes that food through our agency network, reaching children, seniors, working families and individuals facing hunger in our community. The Food Bank reaches more than 300,000 people each month.
Funders like the Henry L. Guenther Foundation allow the Food Bank to provide nutritious food for our neighbors in need so they can prepare well-balanced meals for themselves and their families. Access to nutritious options means families will not have to resort to cheaper foods that are low in nutritional value or to go without food completely. “We appreciate the generous support of the Henry L. Guenther Foundation who has been a committed partner in our fight against hunger in our community throughout the years,” said Michael Flood, President and CEO.
The Food Bank provides well-balanced meals and food kits for children facing hunger. This helps prevent nutritional deficiencies that could turn into lifelong health problems such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. It also helps to establish healthy eating habits and provides the nutrition needed to concentrate and perform well in school. Early access to healthy meals supports strong educational development, which in turn sets children up for a successful future full of opportunity and promise.
Genera, her husband and children all benefit from multiple Food Bank programs, which she says helps to alleviate her family’s worries about nutrition. The meals Genera’s children receive through the After School Meals Program, and the healthy groceries they receive through the weekly pantry distribution, help her family stay nourished while also allowing them to save money for other bills. Genera says it is a joy to be able to share fresh fruits and vegetables with her family and gets excited talking about her children’s plans for the future.
Providing food to seniors in our community helps them live longer, happier and healthier lives. The Los Angeles Food Bank has the largest senior food assistance distribution program in the country. Wayne, a senior and war veteran, visits his local food pantry on a monthly basis to supplement his limited diet with the foods he needs to be well.
Wayne is one of the many veterans who struggles with food insecurity. Food distributed through our agency network helps hundreds of families and individuals facing the same dilemma as Wayne; once they pay their bills, not much is left over for food – especially nutritious food.
When the Food Bank can increase access to these vital resources, families and individuals have a greater ability to pay other bills. Wayne is grateful. “On my behalf and certainly many other people, thank you,” he said. “There are people who are healthy and able to function in the world who wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for those that support the Food Bank.”
